Eric Kightley served in the RAF during the Burma campaign, and was based in West Bengal. His B24 Liberator Bomber was forced to ditch in the Bay of Bengal on May 2nd 1945, during the final push to liberate Rangoon (Operation Dracula), killing most of his crew. Among those who perished was James Brindley Nicolson, the only pilot in fighter command to earn a VC during WW2.
