Author and explorer Levison Wood has become an Ambassador for the Burma Star Memorial Fund.
Levison is a professional explorer, writer and photographer who has published 11 best-selling books and produced many critically acclaimed TV documentaries which have been aired around the world.
"It is an honour for me to become an Ambassador for the Burma Star Memorial Fund," he said. "My grandfather served in the East and was involved in the BSMF for many years, and his own gravestone carries the star."
Levison's passion for adventure and discovering more about indigenous ways of life has led him to walk the length of the Nile, the Himalayas, Central America, cross the Caucasus, circumnavigate the Arabian Peninsula and follow the migration and conservation of elephants in Botswana.
Levison spent a number of years as an Officer in the British Parachute Regiment, where he served in Afghanistan. His latest book Escape from Kabul: The Inside Story, was released in March 2023.
His grandfather, Levison Hopkin Wood, served with 2nd Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers during the Second World War (1939-45), taking part in the long and gruelling campaign in Burma against the forces of the Japanese Imperial Army.
In a film, recorded in 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Japanese surrender, Levison took an emotional journey back in time. With the help of his dad and Dr Peter Johnston of the National Army Museum, he discovered not only his grandfather's personal story, but that of many other soldiers who fought in this 'Forgotten War'. Levison is an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the Explorers Club, and is an ambassador of several charities including BSMF.
