Burma Star Memorial Fund Schools Project Lead

Melissa Jakes is the Burma Star Memorial Fund Schools Project Lead and a Teacher of History at Barclay Academy in Hertfordshire.

Melissa graduated from Somerville College, University of Oxford in 2021 with a BA in History. After completing her undergraduate, she entered her teacher training and completed a History PGCE in Secondary Education at Linacre College, University of Oxford.

Melissa is currently devising a sequence of lessons for Year 9 pupils on the Burma campaign which aims to widen student understanding of the Second World War and the profound legacy of Burma today. The sequence aims to cultivate curiosity and intrigue amongst a new generation of students.

The diverse nature of the conflict lends itself to a wide variety of disciplines and interests therefore is an ideal subject of study to enrich the KS3 curriculum.
