Ken Knowles

On behalf of Morecambe Heritage, David Evans has been running an oral histories project over the past twelve months capturing the reminiscences of WWII veterans, including ex service personnel, as well as those in support roles, working in factories, on the land etc.

There is a geographical focus to the project of Morecambe, Lancaster and surrounding areas. The project, which is funded by HLF, was approved primarily because of the recognition that there are now, so few WWII veterans who saw active service left, the importance of capturing their recollections is urgent and final.

The interview with Burma Star Veteran Ken Knowles, who served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, represents a unique first-hand insight into his personal experience during the war. Ken describes the extensive training, at a variety of locations in England. Unloading Sherman tanks, and advising a commanding officer to disguise the tanks so they would not be spotted from the air (a suggestion that had him made up to Lance Corporal!) then travelling to India, and across to the North East where he supported the troops fighting in Burma, as a member of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

Sadly Ken passed away in April 2026, but his daughter is very keen that the film should be seen by as many people as possible.
